Film coating

MEYER » Anwendung » Film coating

Film coating is a key process in the laminating sector and enables the precise bonding of different materials. Two or three rolls are rolled-off at the same time, treated in the laminating machine and then neatly rewound. While a classic coating process – such as applying SK film to foam – is used for two rolls, the middle lane serves as a thermoplastic adhesive for stable material composites with three rolls.

This process is not only suitable for flexible rolled materials, but can also be carried out with solid materials in plate shape. This opens up a wide range of possible uses for industry, construction, automotive and other technical applications. The high level of process reliability ensures consistent quality and reliable joining properties.

Typical applications range from self-adhesive foil on foam for the production of self-adhesive sound or thermal insulation parts to the bonding of two-layer textile composites and the finishing of foams or knitted spacers for leather lamination. The coating of rock wool with aluminum foil – for durable roof insulation, for example – is also a common application.

Possible applications

• Self adhesive film on foam for self adhesive sound or thermal insulation parts
• Bonding of a two-layer textile composite
• Finishing foams or spacer fabric as semi-finished products for leather lamination
• Coating rock wool with aluminum foil for roof insulation

Questions & Answers

What is film coating?
In film coating, two or three sheets of material are joined together in a laminating machine. Depending on the process, the result is either a pure coating, such as the application of SK film to foam, or a stable material composite using a thermoplastic adhesive.
Which materials can be laminated?
Flexible materials such as foam, textiles or knitted spacers as well as solid materials in the form of plates can be laminated. Common applications are self-adhesive insulation foams, textile composites or aluminum foil coatings on rock wool.
What is film coating used for?
The film coating is used to improve material properties or create new functions – for example for sound and heat insulation, technical compounds, leather laminates or insulating materials in the construction industry.
